【Interview VIA Program Director Dwight Clark】
The American Language and Culture (ALC)

[Question]
1.What is ALC (Stanford) Program?
The American Language and Culture (ALC) Program combines 1) small-group English classes at Stanford University and 2) a wide range of afternoon and evening field-trips, discussions and events designed to get students more deeply into American life and its current issues.
ALC also provides a unique international experience in which Japanese and Taiwanese students, along with American hosts, live together in a dormitory. Thus, ideas can be exchanged and friendships can easily grow.
The idea is a simple one: An international setting such as this allows students to use English informally in many situations every day. The program stimulates students to think and act internationally–and to confront cultural differences and similarities firsthand. In other words, it helps prepare people to take leadership positions in an international world.
2.Why does VIA prepare for many types of program?
(ex. ALC1,2,3 and Southeast program…)
Different programs have different purposes. For example, when the SFC teachers approached VIA ten years ago about a shorter program using English in the February-March vacation period, VIA suggested a program in Southeast Asia. English is the international language in that region; moreover, we feel it is very important for Japanese and American students to understand, appreciate and respect the cultures and peoples of Southeast Asia. (VIA also has been sending American volunteers to that region since 1963, so the organization is quite familiar with it.)
We’ve been pleased to see the Keio students develop a surprisingly deep understanding of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore through this program–and then continue their interest upon their return to Keio.
3.What kind person do you want to join this program?
We look for thoughtful, responsible young people (of whatever grade and age) who are strongly motivated to put themselves in a provocative new international setting–and grow. We’re especially excited when we find students who are thinking about their own role in a world which is becoming increasingly internationalized and inter-dependent, as these are the people who usually make the most of a VIA experience. An open mind is crucial for such programs, as students will be meeting new cultures and ideas–and need to be receptive to them.
4.What is a special feature of Stanford program.
Perhaps it is our emphasis on individual growth: as a responsible, mature person who will become involved in this increasingly inter-dependent world. Japan (and every other nation) needs a new generation of motivated young people who can live and work easily in an international setting. VIA is excited to take a small part in encouraging and generating such people.
5.If it’s possible, please tell about interesting story or wonderful story of Stanford program until now.
Actually, there are hundreds of stories, mostly about former VIA participants who realized after our program that they have much greater possibilities for their lives than they had previously recognized.
This was demonstrated to me quite clearly several years when I was walking around SFC. One of our former participants ran up to me and said, excitedly: "Dwight, I want to tell how how VIA has changed my life. Before the program, my extra money went for clothes and CDs. Now, it goes for books and travel!" And, to be sure, that student had become sufficiently excited about creating his own international education that, in the following two years, he worked hard at parttime jobs and then–after a lot of reading and other preparation–traveled at different times to China, Taiwan, India and Africa. He managed to combine his SFC education with a very personal, yet profound international education through such travel. You can just imagine how well equipped he now is to understand and to work within the larger world.
6.Finally, please give us some commments.
Keio-SFC students have been given the great gift of an excellent education. To truly "live fully" during your lifetime, I think it’s really important to understand and experience firsthand the world in which you live, with all its cultures, differences and similarities. Whether with a VIA program or in another way, I hope that all SFC students will try to create for themselves a personal education which makes them not only more international, but fuller human beings–people who are excited to be truly a part of these challenging times.
