　来年１２回目を向かえる東南アジアプログラムは、前回までの特集で取り上げていた「スタンフォードプログラム」も主催している非営利団体VIAによる実績あるプログラムです。次回は２月17日に出発予定！まだまだ…と思っていも、年が明けるともうスグです！なので、皆さん。同プログラムについての詳細情報や生の声をゲットしたかったら、ぜひご一読下さい。
　特集第１回目では、SFCで英語の授業を持たれているGarren先生へのインタビュー記事です。同プログラムに同伴されているGarren先生から、活動趣旨や具体的な内容、面白いエピソードなどをお聞きしてみました。

【Interview　Mr. Garren Mulloy】
1.東南アジアプログラムとは何ですか？
　同プログラムでは約17日間の研修で、タイ、マレーシア、シンガポールの３ヶ国を訪れます。このプログラムは、正式には”現代の東南アジアの諸問題に関するプログラム”と呼ばれています。その名の通りここでの目的は、今日の東南アジアで個人・社会・組織が直面している様々な問題に対して、参加する学生の理解を促すことです。
　プログラムでは、以下のような内容の研修を行っています。
　①　雇用や住宅、共同体の仕事における貧困と開発について
　②　メディアや公式発表について
　　（デジタル新聞や地域ケーブルテレビのベンチャー企業といった代
　　　替メディアの発表なども含む）
　③　ビジネスと起業について：
　　　　　　訪問先の国で、経済状況の改善に直接寄与している団体や
　　　　　　個人の方々と会う。
　④　文化的諸問題について：
　　　　　　分裂や偏見といった全ての危険性と、その刺激や多様性によ
　　　　　　る利点などを含む、各国が持つ豊かで多様な文化構成を見
　　　　　　る。
2.　このプログラムへは、どのような人に参加して欲しいですか？
　私達は、新たな状況に遭遇したり、現地に住む人々と出会ったりすることに強い意欲を持ち、最も優秀で明晰な人達を求めています。
　訪れる地域で出会う人々は、お金持ちで野心家か貧乏で謙虚かのどちらかである場合が多いでしょう。しかしこのプログラムに参加する学生には、そのどちらの側の人々に対しても、品位や尊敬、関心を持って接することができるよう求められます。
　語学の能力や海外生活の経験、アジアの諸問題における学問的知識も大切ですが、それ以上に、開放的な思考力や思いやりの精神、人間らしさとはどういうことかへの関心が非常に重要なのです。
3.　東南アジアプログラムの特徴とは？
　参加者は現地に住む人々の生活のの中にまで溶け込むことができます。従って、現地に住む人以外はめったに垣間見ることができないような様々なことを経験できます。例えば、スラム居住者の生活について考えたり、タイの村にホームステイをしたりします。また夕方には、宿泊先の寮で学生達と一緒に過ごしたりもします。ツアーや個人旅行では、このような経験をすることはできないでしょう。
4.　今までの東南アジアプログラムのおもしろい話やステキなお話を教えて下さい。
　タイのタカ村での宿泊生活は、参加する学生にとっていつも最高の経験になります。なぜなら、村の人々の礼儀正しいマナーや温かみ、そこでのゆったりとした時間の流れ、そして子供たちと一緒に遊んだりしたことは、絶対に忘れることのできない経験になるからです。
※　りゅうちゃんのズボンがこし器になったのは面白かったし、何人かの学生は辛い食事のせいで腹痛を起こしたりしていましたが、それでも ほとんどが良い経験となっていますよ。
5.　最後にコメントをお願いします。
　同プログラムは他のものと異なり、教室の外へ出て、現地の人々の実際の生活や公共の場で学習します。かなり多くのエネルギーが必要ですし、しっかり考えることもしなくてはいけません。なので結論としては、他のプログラムとの比較はできないということでしょうか。
　残念なことといえば、このプログラムはとても期間が短いことです。多くの学生にとって、数週間よりむしろ数ヶ月滞在する方が、東南アジアにおいて知識や経験を増やすことができるとわかってはいるのですが…

1.What is Southeast Asia Programme?
The 3 countries covered by the programme are Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, over the course of 17 days.
The South East Asia Programme is called the ‘Contemporary SouthEast Asia Issues Programme’, and this reflects the aim to introduce students to the range of issues facing individuals, society and institutions in Southeast Asia today. These include issues related to 1 poverty and development, such as employment, housing and community work, 2 media and public expression, including alternative media outlets such as digital newspapers, and local cable television ventures, 3 business and entrepreneurship, meeting with groups and individuals connected directly with improving the economic situation in the three countries visited, and, 4 cultural affairs, with each of the nations having rich and varied cultural compositions with all the related risks of division and prejudice and also the benefits of stimulous and variety that this brings.
2.　What kind person do you want to join this programme?
The people we are looking for are the best and brightest, those who are ambitious to encounter new situations and meet with people in their local environment. These people may well be the rich and ambitious, or the poor and humble. Treating either type of person with dignity, respect, and concern is the characteristic needed to participate in this programme. Openness of mind, charity of spirit and interest in humanity are far more important than language skills, experience of living abroad, or academic knowledge of Asian issues.
3.　What is a special feature of Southeast Asia Programme.
The participants are able to enter people’s lives, and to experience things that outsiders are rarely able to even glimpse. They have a view of life of slum residents, a homestay in a Thai village. Spend an evening with university students in their dormitory. They would not be able to have such experiences through tours or independent travel.
4.　Please tell about interesting story or wonderful story of Southeast programme until now.
Staying at Ta Ka Village in Thailand is always the greatest experience as our students always find the slow pace of life, gentle manner of the villagers, the warmness of the community and playing with the children a quite unforgetable experience. There are very few bad experiences, although Ryu-chan getting some leaches in his trousers was funny, and some people did get upset stomachs due to the spicey food.
5.　Finally, please give us some comments.
This programme is like no other. It is taking study out of the classroom and into the reality of private lives and public environments. It requires a great deal of energy and thought but the results are like no other programme. The shame is that it is so short, as I am sure thatmost people could spend months rather than weeks expanding their horizons in South East Asia.
